Possumhaw Holly is a small, deciduous tree or shrub ranging from 15 to 30 feet tall. The holly is characterized by its pale gray, twiggy horizontal branches. The Possumhaw’s oval, toothed leaves remain dark green throughout the autumn, finally turning yellow. Inconspicuous flowers precede clusters of persistent, red berries on female trees, which provide TCU’s campus with a burst of color each winter. Opossums, raccoons, songbirds, and other mammals eat the fruit of this species. The Celts hung holly in their doorways to ward off evil.
